Git Version Control for Everyone is not the classic book for developers; reading first pages you understand in minutes that what the author aims to do is to explain what versioning is to plain folks, before talking about Git.
Ravishankar Somasundaram approach is interesting for non programmer people, and generally, for everyone works with files and needs to keep changes during the time.
Using Git for Word or Excel files, or even for images or video is not a so crazy: Git has a little overhead, even for binary files, so it can simply become one of the easier, cheaper and fast (Git is really fast!) backup system you ever can get.
